What is Bridging The Gap?

In order to learn and develop, our young people need new experiences and supportive opportunities to learn and practice life skills. Bridging the Gap provides participants with a safe and supportive space to reinvent themselves and set their record straight.

BTG offers eligible young people 36 months of housing assistance through the Family Unification Program voucher (FUP)

At the heart of BTG is our coaching model of service delivery. Young people utilizing a FUP voucher are assigned an Independent Living Coach that works with the youth for the duration of the 36 months of housing support. ILC’s concentrate their efforts on creating a safe, supportive and empowering environment where youth can identify their individual needs and goals.

Financial Literacy

Once living in their own apartment utilizing a housing voucher, BTG participants are offered a financial literacy class and ongoing coaching to help develop a budget, pay bills, open a bank account, and start saving money.

Community Connections

BTG staff and volunteers help youth get connected with peers and caring adults through networking, recreational activities, and community involvement.

Whether completing their high school diploma/GED and/or enrolling in vocational or college classes, BTG participants can access a range of educational support services including coaching and resources to help successfully navigate the educational system.

Bridging the Gap’s Independent Living Coaches work closely with each youth to establish their goals, navigate available resources, and create plans that will lead to increased self-sufficiency once the youth exit the program. Youth choose to participate in a variety of employment activities that best meet their individual needs and interests.

BTG empowers youth to be a voice in their community on issues that affect children and families. We encourage our young people to be strong leaders, to share their stories and advocate on behalf of their peers and children still in care to improve the foster care system at both the local and state level.
