Mile High United Way's Social Innovation Fund invests in early literacy programs to deliver effective interventions using data to drive program improvements and expand services to children from birth to age eight.

What the Social Innovation Fund does:

  • Funds promising early literacy programs serving Colorado's families with children from birth through age eight to develop rigorous evaluation and to replicate and expand services improving reading proficiency
  • Reaches children across Colorado through home visitation, training for teachers and care providers, summer programs and one-on-one tutoring
  • Leverages $1.8 million each year in federal funds to create up to $6.6 million in literacy investments in Colorado's communities
  • Shares what's working by studying early literacy approaches and implementation drivers most effective in promoting reading proficiency¬†

What success looks like:

  • Increased reading proficiency among children in supported programs over five years (through 2017)
  • Investment in expanding the capabilities and impact of selected nonprofits
  • Replication and expansion of programs that promote reading and proficiency
