How To Give: Tax Credits
MHUW Tax Credit Program
GROW YOUR GIFT THROUGH TAX CREDITS

When you give to Mile High United Way, you can take advantage of tax credit programs that enable you to give more, receive something in return and possibly multiply your gift in the process.

A minimum gift of $500 by check or credit card to an eligible United Way project or agency, will enable you to receive either a 25% or 50% tax credit from the state, in addition to the tax deduction you may receive for charitable gifts.

Benefits to You Guidelines
  • Considerable tax savings.
  • Payroll deduction does not apply.
  • Both individuals and corporations can take advantage of tax credits.
  • Tax credit donations must be a minimum of $500.
  • Excess tax credits may be carried forward for up to five years.
  • Donations may be made by check or credit card. All donations should include a pledge form showing DEZ or CCCC agency/program selection.
  • Donations and pledge forms may be given to your company campaign chair or mailed to:  Mile High United Way, 2505 18th Street, Denver, CO 80211-3939

As with all charitable donations, please consult with your accountant or tax specialist.

Double Your Gift With a Federal Match

Gifts to three eligible projects (see list below) are eligible for the 50% state tax credit; plus they may also bring down federal matching funds through the Child Care and Development Fund. These extra matching federal funds will then be allocated by the state to Colorado counties, based on population/need, through the Colorado Child Care Assistance Program. This federal match is only available through Mile High United Way.

You can increase the impact of your gift by designating to one or more of the following child care projects:
  • MHUW Child Care Fund
  • Lights On After School
  • MHUW School Readiness Initiative
A gift of $1,000 to one of the above projects, when matched with $1,000 of federal funds, puts $2,000 into our community and state supporting School Readiness and Youth Success projects

Potential Changes to Colorado State - Child Care Contribution Tax Credit Provisions

You may claim the Child Care Contribution Credit (CCCC) for 2010 if your tax-credit-eligible donation is paid before December 31, 2010, which you can pay by either check or credit card. However, due to a provision in Colorado state law, the credit may be deferred starting January 1, 2011. If your credit exceeds your Colorado state income tax liability in 2010, even if the credit is not available in 2011 or beyond, you can still roll over excess credits in subsequent years.

Gifts made in 2011 may also be eligible for the credit if the State General Fund Appropriations grow by six percent over the previous year. This information will be available December 2010.

You may still make a CCCC donation after December 31, 2010, but if the tax credit is deferred, you will not be able to claim the credit until the next tax year for which a revenue surplus is anticipated and the tax credits go back into effect. Any excess credits contributed may be carried forward for up to five years.

As with all charitable donations, please consult with your accountant or tax specialist. For more information from the Colorado Department of Revenue about the Colorado Child Care Contribution Credit.
