What We Do: Youth Success Video

Nurturing Students When the School Day Ends

At the end of each school day, eleven-year-olds Miguel and Duveena attend Lights On After School. In addition to getting academic help, they enjoy supervised activities, adult mentoring, and a safe place to "hang out" after school.

Together we can guide our youth toward a better future.

A fourth of Colorado’s high school students do not graduate on time, according to a 2006 Colorado Department of Education report. Yet we know that a high school diploma is a fundamental building block for achieving a self-sufficient life. The Colorado Fiscal Policy Institute’s 2007 study on self sufficiency shows that more than half of our state’s high school dropouts do not earn enough income to afford even the most basic living expenses.

Mile High United Way’s Youth Success initiative supports mentoring and after-school programs to help at-risk youth graduate from high school. In 2006, more than 26,000 students participated in after-school programming supported by Mile High United Way.
