Children are reading at or above grade level by the end of third grade
We know reading matters, especially in the third grade.
Third grade is when children make the crucial switch from learning to read, to reading to learn. Every child that is not reading at grade level by the end of third grade risks falling behind and never fully catching up. Can you imagine trying to learn writing, math, science, technology, or social studies if you couldn’t read? Every child we allow to miss this milestone is a child we have failed long in to the future.
Mile High United Way’s goal is to surround young children with a literacy-focused environment so they will soak up both the skill and the love of reading. We train teachers, parents, and caregivers. We place tutors and volunteers into schools. We give our kids safe places in their neighborhoods to learn and grow. Through all of this we consciously create a culture of reading that sets our children up for success.
