Putting Food on the Table

Melissa, a resident of Adams County, is no stranger to fighting for her survival. She has lived with mental disabilities for most of her life, including a brain tumor and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), and has struggled through more physical and emotional battles than any person should endure in a single lifetime. However, her most recent bout had nothing to do with disease or injury, but rather a lack of a vital life necessity:  the ability to put food on the table.

Antonja's 2-1-1 Success Story

In Need This Holiday Season

The holidays are upon us, a time for joy and giving. Antonja’s holidays were not looking bright. As a single mother caring for her six children and grandson, she didn’t have money for gifts. “My uncle knew I needed help. He told me to call 2-1-1.”

Antonja had received help from 2-1-1 once before when she needed beds for her kids. She was put in touch with the Denver Rescue Mission, a partner of Mile High United Way’s Adult Self Sufficiency Initiative.

Terrence Finds Assistance Through 2-1-1

While on his way to work, Terrence’s car was struck by a drunk driver. It was 6:19 a.m. Terrence, his wife and their 3-year old son were in the car. Terrence and his wife both sustained injuries, but thankfully their son was fine. Due to his injuries, Terrence couldn’t work and lost his job. His full recovery took months.

Erin's 2-1-1 Success Story

2-1-1: A Reliable Resource

Erin Nelson found herself in the middle of a tough time as she was struggling to provide food for herself and her young son. In a situation where she felt hopeless and overwhelmed, a family member mentioned Mile High United Way’s 2-1-1. Recalling that time of panic, Erin explains, “I would not have known what to do if I didn’t know that number to call. I would have been lost.”

Alyssa's 2-1-1 Success Story

From Rent Assistance to Self-Sufficiency

Alyssa Eckert, whose only income came from disability, was in the process of being evicted from her apartment last January. Not sure where else to turn she called Mile High United Way’s 2-1-1, a resource that she had used a few times in the past. “Sometimes I find myself in need of assistance on an emergency basis. It has always been helpful to call 2-1-1, especially for assistance with rent and utilities,” she explains.
